The Sun Record stars are almost all gone............

Back when Elvis Knocked on the Memphis recording studios door to record a birthday song for his Momma, ol' Sam Phillips was recording groups like Jackie Brenston and the Delta Kings. Sam was only recording Black artists at the time. As a matter of fact, it would be a year later that Elvis would return to Sam Phillip's studio. His secretary wrote Elvis' name down on a file card with a note saying "Good Ballad Singer". Boy was she understating.

As Elvis would take the nation by storm in 1956, other White country/blues artists would get Sam's favor, causing many fine Black Artists to head north to Detroit. Among these artists that were truly America's first Rock and Rollers were, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins and The Killer Jerry Lee Lewis. The only surviving member of this rock quartet is "Ironically" Jerry Lee Lewis.

I think it's vitally important that America nevr forgets it's rock and roll roots. Rock music is something that is more American than Baseball or Football. (as Europe will claim they started Rounders and Rugby) But nobody in England will deny that the first time they heard Rock music was when Buddy Holly came over. Until then, the Engish were playing a form of bluegrass called Skiffle.

As much as we need democracy and Independence, we need Rock and Roll. Rock is not dead, but there's only a handful of Artists trying to keep it alive. Brian Setzer comes to mind. Terry Anderson sounds more like Rock than the Rolling Stones do these days. Hell, Country music sounds more like Rock than Rock does.

Do America a favor, be a patriout and support your local rock and roll band.
